2025 PGC: Maths (Numicon) and Writing (AOV)

 Introduction:

This year I have two pathways of investigation into my practice.

The first is adapting my maths practice around the new curriculum and with Numicon once we get the resources and PD. AJ has designed a website for maths.

Maths site.

Numicon: I have a quick look around the site - the New Zealand one, which I found out quite quickly was where I needed to be. Numicon is a "distinctive approach to children’s mathematical learning that emphasises three key aspects of doing mathematics: communicating mathematically, exploring relationships, and generalising".

For my blog, I will be looking primarily at the foundations site, then heading into year 1.

We do have the new curriculum maths phases on the website and it links to Hero, as well as Bex's curriculum documents - but it doesn't tally up yet with Numicon.

I look forward to the PD and getting the kits so I can actually trial it.

Writing:

The second curriculum area will be around my small target group for writing.

Vanessa, my release teacher, is great at introducing new words for the week and practising them in writing, so I am going to have a go at that - when swimming finishes!!

I have just taken this from Number Agents - it is something I have thought about before for my writing - the incorporation of Colourful Semantics.

I have included my target group in the AOV this year in anticipation that they might be able to do 2-3 sentences by the end of the year. That is a big expectation.

While we work on spelling as a big part of our whole class focus and have a big focus on handwriting, elements of writing do stand outside of this.  Once a week we will engage with a session from the Syntax project and right now our focus for writing is on writing a full sentence using colourful semantics.

The emphasis is on oral language and it is a heavily scaffolded process.  I found last year, that the work put in here, had big spinoff benefits for the remainder of the year and last year my children were writing better than ever class I have had before.  I credit this progress to the time we spent building the foundations of writing, or you could say the building blocks of writing.

Considering my lofty goals for writing by year end, we are underway practising letter formation at the very least.
